Balancing the spirit of adventure and discovery with traditional ideas and methods, this modern mezcal is handcrafted by a fourth-generation family of mezcaleros in San Dioniso, just outside of Oaxaca.
Gem & Bolt is uniquely infused with damiana, a flowering Mexican herb used for hundreds of years by the Aztecs and Mayans and fabled for its mood-enhancing qualities. The result is a harmoniously crafted mezcal with a revolutionary spirit.
Gem & Bolt is made with mature hand-harvested Espadin agave, grown for between 7 and 8 years in the highlands of Oaxaca. The quartered piñas are then slow roasted with ocote pine or mesquite wood in conic earth pits for up to three days before being crushed by a traditional horse-drawn tahona stone wheel.
The crushed fibres and liquid then ferment in pine wood vats with naturally occurring wild yeast, prior to a first distillation in copper stills. The first run of the spirit is then rested in oak for between 3 and 6 months.
This second distillation is when the damiana leaf is added, this time in a unique stainless steel/copper alloy still. The spirit comes off the still at around 65% abv, before being blended with local fresh mountain spring water to create the finished mezcal which is bottled at 44%.
100% Organic Espadin agave, mountain spring water, organic damiana.
Gem & Bolt is a mezcal with a unique proposition, thanks to the fabled mood-enhancing qualities of the damiana plant. Softer and less smoky than many mezcals, it can be sipped ‘purist’ (straight up or on the rocks) or mixed in lively cocktails and long serves.
