LAGG NEW MAKE
Isle of Arran’s Lochranza Distillery gained a sister in 2019. Lagg Distillery, located on the southern end of the island, has been distilling heavily-peated spirits since March of that year. While that spirit matures, its New Make offers an insight into the whisky it will become.
In Arran’s parish of Kilmory, overlooking the Firth of Clyde and the beaches of the south, the team at Lagg are using custom-made copper pot stills to produce experimental peated spirits.
In contrast with the majority of production at sister distillery Lochranza, the peated barley used at Lagg Distillery imparts rich campfire smoke notes to this light and fruity spirit.
While the majority of this spirit is being aged to produce single malt, this new make is bottled without any time spent in oak, and at 63.5% ABV, to showcase the full range of flavours in the spirit that will eventually become Lagg Distillery’s single malts. The first of these whiskies will be ready in 2022.
